MOT History Check

Check the MOT status of a vehicle

HPI is a brand name that has become generic for a vehicle history check. MotoCheck provides the same core service (finance, stolen, write-off checks) but is tailored and marketed specifically for motorcycles. They are comparable providers.
MotoCheck sources data from official UK agencies (DVLA, Police, MIAFTR, finance houses). This makes it highly accurate and reliable. However, there can be a short delay in databases being updated, so it represents the history up to the point of the check.
Do not proceed with the purchase. The only safe way forward is for the seller to clear the finance fully and provide proof of settlement before any money changes hands. If they cannot, walk away.
It can be, but with major caveats. It must have been professionally repaired to a high standard, and you should get it independently inspected. It will be worth less than a non-categorised bike, be harder to insure, and may be harder to sell in the future. Proceed with extreme caution and knowledge.
It’s possible to forge a PDF. Always insist on conducting the check yourself, or ask the seller to share a live link to the report on the MotoCheck website, which is harder to falsify.
Prices vary, but a single check typically ranges from £5 to £20, depending on the depth of information. This is a tiny fraction of the cost of buying a problematic motorcycle.
You can access basic MOT history for free on the UK Government website, and some basic details via the DVLA’s free vehicle enquiry service. However, these do not include the crucial finance, stolen, or insurance write-off data. A paid check from MotoCheck or a similar provider is non-negotiable for a full picture.
Contact MotoCheck and the relevant authority (Police for stolen, finance company for debt) immediately. You may also need to seek legal advice. This highlights why the check must be done before purchase.
